Under the Blue Sky won the Time Out Live Award 2001 for Best New Play in the West End and Festen the 2005 Theatregoers Choice Award for Best New Play.
In addition to his work as a writer, David has worked extensively as an encourager of playwriting, especially to new and first-time playwrights. In July 2007 the University of Exeter honoured his work as a playwright by making him a Doctor of Letters.
