Staged reading at the Theatre Royal Haymarket
2:30pm, Friday 31st January 2014
"Perhaps we will at last have time. Real time. Time to lie back and rest our weary heads. Time to think about everything. About everyone we've lost along the way, about all that has been and gone. About the undone years and a world that will have to be remade."
It is the morning of November 11th 1918 and the Great War is finally over. But for the Luxton family a new struggle is just beginning.
Taking place on that date, and one year later in the run up to the first anniversary of Armistice Day, The Undone Years asks questions about remembrance and the true cost of war. It is a claustrophobic family drama set against the backdrop of a globally devastating event. In the aftermath of World War One how did people go on? How did they cope with the everyday conflicts of their own, conflicts that did not just disappear as the last guns fell silent? For those that survived, how much peace did peace actually bring?
Pitch Your Play offers an exclusive opportunity for emerging talent aged 17-30 to showcase their work in front of an audience. The scripts are new and unpublished.
The Creative Team
The Undone Years marks Simon Cotton's debut as a writer. He is a trained actor, and has spent the last two years performing in Action to the Word's acclaimed production of A Clockwork Orange at the Soho Theatre and in venues across the UK and Australia. He has always loved writing and has a short film in pre-production, but this is first full length play. He is immensely glad he had the courage to send it to Masterclass.
Simon graduated from the Bridge Theatre Training Company in 2009. His other credits for Action to the Word include Titus Andronicus and Romeo and Juliet. Other theatre credits include The Dumb Waiter at the Yvonne Arnaud Riverside Studio, The Winter's Tale and Mad Forest at the Cockpit, The Homecoming at the Djanogly Theatre. Film credits include The Dark Hours for Pukka Films, Six, and The Decorator.
Oliver Mackwood is currently a recipient of the Mackintosh Bursary, on a program that will see him work for Cameron Mackintosh, and with two of the country’s best subsidised theatres, Chichester Festival Theatre and Soho Theatre. He co-produced Mr. Happiness & The Water Engine at The Old Vic Tunnels with Theatre6. The production was given critics choice by TimeOut & was nominated for fringe show of the year. He and the creative team from Theatre6 are currently working on a musical production called Moments. Oliver is currently producing The Undone Years, and after creatively exploring the text through Masterclass at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, Oliver intends to open the production in October 2014. Please contact Oliver on email@example.com for investment inquiries.
