Masterclass Young Writers, New Writing Month 1 & 8 August

This August, Masterclass is hosting a programme of events at The Other Palace Theatre for aspiring playwrights. We are looking to work with young people aged 16-18 who are interested in writing and/or have something to say about the world.

Monday 1 August - you will learn about the building blocks of storytelling and, with the help of professional writer Connor Allen (Children's Laureate of Wales for 2021-2023), create a monologue about something that is important to you.

Monday 8 August - work on your monologue with a professional actor, and then either perform the monologue yourself, or allow the actor to perform your words. We will then film or audio record the performance.

Later in August, with your permission, we will share the monologues in a mini-digital-festival of new work via our socials @MasterclassTRH

Each workshop will run from 1 - 5pm at The Other Palace, please ensure you are able to make both dates and can get to and from The Other Palace Theatre (12 Palace Street London, SW1E 5JA).

Biog

Connor Allen

Connor is the newly appointed Children’s Laureate of Wales.

He studied Acting at Trinity Saint David and as a performer has worked with companies such as Sherman Theatre, Tin Shed Theatre, National Theatre Wales and represented Wales in the Triforce’s Monologue Slam Winners Edition.

He was a member of the BBC Wales Welsh Voices and The Welsh Royal Court writing groups and has written for BBC Wales, BBC Radio 4, Sherman Theatre, Literature Wales and Dirty Protest. He is associate artist of his hometown theatre, The Riverfront in Newport.

In 2020, Connor was long listed for the role of Wales Writer in Residence and in 2021 won the Rising Star Wales Award. He is a proud recipient of the Jerwood Live Work Fund, a programme designed to support exceptional makers of live performance during the pandemic.

Connors work is heavily inspired by elements of his own life such as grief, love, masculinity, identity, and ethnicity.

His autobiographical grime-theatre mash-up, The Making of a Monster, is available now on BBC Sounds. Originally written as a play, it will hit the stage this November at Wales Millennium Centre.
