Join us for our next Script Social, in association with Nick Hern Books, as we dive into Kelly Jones's My Mother’s Funeral: The Show. This darkly comic and deeply moving play delves into the personal cost of loss and the societal inequalities around death. Described as “bitingly funny and heartbreakingly raw,” the play invites audiences to consider: how expensive is it to die? And what happens when art and grief collide?
This is your chance to get together with other young theatremakers to explore, unpack, and discuss this award-winning piece, co-produced by leading theatres including Paines Plough, Mercury Theatre, and Belgrade Theatre, and celebrated at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a Fringe First Award.

My Mother's Funeral: The Show
Abigail's mum is dead. But it turns out she can't afford her to be. Did you know how expensive it is to die? It's £4,000 for the funeral. Extra for flowers. And even more if you want sausage rolls. Otherwise, she'll get a council funeral and an unmarked grave.
In her work as a playwright, Abigail has been asked to write about something raw, from her 'unique working-class lens'. Something that will make the audience feel gratifyingly bad about themselves. And so, to afford the funeral, she has to write about her mum.
